The Incredible Massive Letterpress Giveaway!

Howdy from Chicago. My name is Kelly and I have a little letterpress shop called Paper Stories. Back in December I decided to organize a letterpress swap, thinking I would be lucky if I found 10 printers to participate. After putting the word out and sending emails to some of my favorite printers, I ended up with a HUGE print exchange with a wonderfully diverse group totally 38 printers. With a little trial and error on my part trying to figure out the best way to exchange everything, the basic premise was this: Everyone creates an original letterpress art print, make enough copies for everyone in the swap, & send them all to me with a few bucks for shipping. The printers had until March to complete their prints and it wasn't until just a few weeks ago that the massive undertaking of sorting, arranging, packing and shipping the prints back to everyone was complete.

Involved in the swap are not only some well-known seasoned veterans but first-time printers alike. Yet regardless of their experience behind the press, everyone participating took the time to create a well thought out and unique piece and as the organizer of the swap, I couldn't be more proud. I think the best part for me was the opportunity to meet some amazing folks. Quite a few of us actually met up at the National Stationery Show in May and have become cyber pals since. I have already been getting requests from folks about next year's swap or even the possibility of a holiday letterpress ornament swap. Hmmm. We shall see.

How to pick just two?! This is, hands down, the most amazing giveaway. I'm giddy just thinking about how excited someone is going to be to get this package in the mail!

My immediate favorite is the floral rosette by Night Owl. I saw it at their booth at the National Stationery Show last month and fell instantly in love and I love how it's mounted on that thin sheet of wood veneer.

I also love the poppy print by Delphine. I really love all of Erika's illustrations, she's incredibly talented and the colors of this one are so fun!

And I'm sneaking a third! (Is that legal?) I already own a print by Hijirik Studio that is framed and in my house, but this one has a totally different feel. It's really beautiful and I love irises.

Thanks for hosting this spectacular giveaway. I'm having fantasies about an entire wall in my house filled with these gorgeous prints!

JoAnna said...

I have to admit, this is the first time I've ever stumbled across anything like this - thank you Twitter! I had no idea this kind of art form existed and I am so excited by the discovery! I don't even know what people would use letterpress for, but I envision myself sharing this art by making it into stationery, framing pieces into collages, placing select pieces in my "creative spaces" to keep the juices flowing.

I looked through several of the vendors, and I can't even say which I like best. I love the understand simplicity of enjoy design, the detail and color of Sycamore Street, the craftsmanship of Julia Juliette. All of the work is so beautiful and detailed ... I'm so happy to have discovered this whole new world of art! Even if you don't select me for this, I want to thank you for opening my eyes to letterpress.

As a soon-to-be bride I have spent the past year becoming more and more enthralled by the beauty and art that is letterpress. In my search for the perfect invitations I always came back to Delphine Press. Their clean, colorful and organic prints are every brides dream come true. The Poppy Print included in the swap is no exception and I love it! My second choice is new to me but I love equally as much. Yee-Haw Industries has such fun, funky and original designs. I could browse their webpage forever for inspiration. Their print with the sewn square caught me off guard and added such a fun element. Thanks for such an awesome contest but most of all thanks for the eye candy!

Wowwweee! Such greatness, how do you pick just two as favorites!?

I'm going to have to go with paperstories and the little tea pots and green chair press always makes me happy! (close behind was Cindy Tomczyk, nightowl papergoods and bespoke press!!!) love it all!!

Bethany said...

I love them all -- though I had to say narrowing down two favorites was made easier by the fact that a lot were narrowed down because their sites didn't show much of their work... :( I love letterpress and I wish I knew how to do it -- so instead I have to live vicariously through the works of others...!

I am a huge fan of YeeHaw and I love ice cream (so much so I have an ice cream blog: scoopalicious.blogspot.com), so a natural favorite is their carnival series.

I love bon vivant's entry of the frog -- I wanted to buy it for a friend actually, but since it is part of the edition, I don't think I can. A young friend of mine liked science dissecting so much she sent a camera phone photo to her mom.

I own Albertine Press's Fluff print -- I like it as much as I like fluff, and boy do I like fluff.

Love A Favorite Design's beer & pretzels letterpress stationery...and I don't even like beer. Great concept though and I love the mix of the gocco and the subtle lettterpress.

Ooops! I did too many. Sorry, I was just so inspired.
