Weekend Project: Sprouting Lentils

I just picked up the latest Chatelaine Magazine this week specifically for their feature on organizing and on the last page was this cute little idea to sprout lentils indoors.  Aren't they adorable? These ones are planted in saved wooden brie boxes. How to: Sprinkle a handful of lentils onto some cotton balls or paper towels keeping damp (but not wet), in a week or so you'll have some adorable delicate sprouts! Photo: Roberto Caruso.

what do you do with these? i know how to use sprouts from the store but do you pick the seeds off the bottoms and eat the whole thing or do you trim the tops with scissors and let it grow back repeatedly?? Explain please.. Ive been looking at buying a sprouter but this looks easy, you dont mention having to rinse them or anyting!!

it works with any kind of beans... I'm from brazil and we used to do this project at elementary school with pinto beans, you'll get the sprouts and I'm sure you can eat them too! :)

Hehe, we used to do that in school as well! Funny how one can use elementary stuff to make beautiful decorations pronto!
@Andrea: Yes, you can eat them when the green leaves are still very small. They are nutritious bombs and rather tasty!
@amanda: You don't need a sprouter, just a couple of short glass jars. You can google it and you'll find lots of info about how to make sprouts of almost any seed!

You can most certainly eat them too! just trim and eat. If it's sprouted in a jar, you can eat the whole thing. Dried organic peas (from the grocery store!) also make a pretty table decoration in a beautiful shallow bowl or cup, and delicious too. http://www.freestylefarm.ca/2012/01/23/grow-your-own-microgreens-sprouts/

It is also a custom in Greece to put the lentils in low jars on Saint Barbara's Day and they are sprouting till Christmas Day and you decorate your Christmas table with them. AriadnefromGreece!
