When we saw Joy Madison's Christmas tree on Instagram, we thought we were looking right into a vintage Christmas card. And the lights (so sparkly)! She brought the essence of vintage Christmas to life!
Tell us a bit about your pictures?
My style is simple, eclectic and colorful. I love to mix vintage and handmade things and with affordable modern offerings from easily accessible locations. I shop seasonally at Hobby Lobby, Michaels and JoAnns. I try to change things up every Christmas (well every season, holiday, and year :) I have a few things that make an appearance annually, like my bottlebrush and other trees. I usually add one or two big trees to the collection every year. I enjoy thrifting as much as anyone, and love to find bright vintage pieces to add to my eclectic holiday decor!
I live in a tiny house with 7 people! 2 of my 5 kids are already teenagers, so we have a very full house. It's not always the cleanest or quietest house on the block, but I love to fill it with pretty things that make me feel happy. There is a little bit of Christmas in almost every room!
These pictures are from our main living spaces. The tree is covered with years of collected ornaments and white lights (always!) I'm a mantle girl and I change my mantle out probably 6-8 times a year. The window came out of an old house here in WA. My felt wreath and felt tree is from Target. I use an old crib spring to cover my fireplace unless we are using it! Usually our stockings go up on Christmas Eve only, but this year I found some stockings that reminded me of my grandma at Michael's and I bought them for my formally stockingless husband and I.
My hutch is vintage. I use it to display things that are meaningful to me. The angel came from my dear mother in law and the hobnail glass vases were in my grandparents window my whole childhood. I've been collecting bottlebrush trees for awhile now. None of mine are vintage, but my MIL has promised her vintage forest to join forces with mine! I also collect "joy" things for obvious reasons. (Joy and Merry Christmas sign-Michaels, M- JoAnns, globes- vintage)
I love to add Christmas into my kitchen as well, but keep it functioning normally. This box tray is a perfect way to contain my cutting boards (that pretty one is from World Market!) and also gives me a place to make a vignette! I love a good vignette! This year I encapsulated a bunch of my forest into different sized glass jars and used them around my house. I love the fantastical way it makes people feel. So many people have commented how they want to get inside the "snow globes." (Steve mug, tea canister and Pyrex, are vintage)
What is your favorite holiday tradition?
I love doing advent devotions. We've done these for several years with our kids every night of advent. It draws us together once a day and it focuses our hearts on the true meaning of Christmas! We also love to open one gift in Christmas Eve. It's always new Christmas PJs! My kids always look forward to this known/unknown gift tradition.
What are three go-to gifts you'll be giving this year?
1) Books always books, and I LOVE the convenience of Amazon.com
2) I always try to hand make some gifts: cookies, ornaments, filled mason jars, hand lettered prints etc.
3) If all else fails let them pick out some one else's handmade item. I love giving things from Etsy, and now with Etsy Gift Cards it's even easier!!
Thank you Joy!
