Healthy Hair + Skin Beauty Tips for Summer

—This post is sponsored by Pantene and Olay. Thank you for supporting the organizations and brands that support Poppytalk. All opinions are our own.

Every summer, as I tend to spend more time outdoors, I'm always looking for new beauty tips, products and better ways to protect mine and my family's skin and hair against the harsh UV rays and warm weather pollutants. Having always been a little confused about the whole SPF world myself, I recently realized after speaking with a few of my friends, I wasn't alone.

So this year we decided to get really serious and ask the pros some of our most pressing questions about keeping both our hair and skin healthy this summer season. The answers we received were enlightening and worth a share here on the blog.

And for fun, along with our finds, we're also sharing a hyperlapse video we made of two of my favorite summer hairstyles that are not only super easy, they also protect your hair from heat damaging rays. (Psssst! Did you know I used to be a hairstylist in a former life?)  I'm also sharing some cool finds when it comes to new hair and skin products for the summer!

Starting with skin, we asked Dr. Frauke Neuser, Olay Principal Scientist, a few questions about SPF and how best to use sun protection creams.

Summer Skin Beauty Tips

Q. What is the recommended SPF protection? And is higher better?

A. The recommended SPF depends on your skin type and skin fairness, as well as your lifestyle;as a rule of thumb everybody should be using at least an SPF15 on a daily basis. If you have lighter skin and if you spend significant time outdoors or in the summer, an SPF30 is recommended.

In principle, the higher the SPF the better, but SPF is not a linear scale. SPF15 means it takes 15 times as long for your skin to burn vs. no protection – blocking out 93 per cent of UV radiation. SPF30 blocks 97 per cent, and SPF50 blocks 98 per cent.

Q. Does layering SPF = more protection? (i.e. If you apply SPF 15 and then apply SPF 30, does that mean your protection is SPF 45)?

No, the maximum you can achieve is the protection of the highest SPF product you use. So in this example (SPF15 and then SPF30) it is SPF30.

Q. We've recently heard that one should wear SPF protection indoors as well as on rainy days. Is this true and why?

A. Yes! Some of the damaging UV radiation (mostly UVA) penetrates clouds and also glass – so it is really important to make a moisturizer with SPF a part of your daily skincare routine, no matter the weather, season or plans for the day. Olay Total Effects with SPF 30 is a great option for daily wear, providing both anti-aging ingredients and protection from the sun, plus it is lightweight so it’s comfortable on the skin.

Q. How often should you re-apply SPF cream? i.e. If I'm wearing an SPF 30, how long does it last?

A. If you are on the beach or very active, the sweating (and swimming) will remove some of the SPF so it is recommended to reapply every two hours. Under normal everyday conditions, research has shown that the SPF protection is still available eight hours after application.

Q. If wearing make-up, should the SPF cream be applied over top of your foundation, or is underneath okay?

A. Whichever way you prefer – most women find the SPF underneath the make-up more practical. When shopping for a great SPF, look for dual benefit products, such as Olay Total Effects with SPF 30; this way you are getting all the great benefits of a moisturizer with anti-aging agents while also protecting your skin. This product is also very lightweight, making it ideal for layering under foundation.

Q. Do SPF creams expire?

A. Like most cosmetic products, sunscreen products should / can be used within three years of purchase. Some carry an expiry date – if yours doesn’t, mark on the packaging when you bought it.

My Top 3 Summer Skin Care Beauty Tips

1. Wear SPF protection, inside and out.
When I heard that you should be wearing SPF protection indoors, I have to say, I was pretty shocked! Aren't you? I mean, even working inside, if you're sitting under any sunbeams, those little rays are damaging your skin!  Who knew?  I knew you could get sun damage while driving, but in my home? So my first new summer skin care beauty tip is to wear SPF protection both indoors and out.

2. Wear Sunglasses
Not only do sunglasses protect my eyes, they also stop me from squinting so much, which in turns, stops the deep wrinkles. With my fair eye colour and eyebrows, bright light always is an issue and squinting is only natural.  So although some people wear sunglasses for the cool factor, mine is for the ‘stop-wrinkle’ factor!

3. Wear a Hat
If I'm going to be in the sun for a longer period, I always make sure I bring a hat to protect my face.  I like the really wide brim, so that it covers not only the front, but the back and sides too!

Cool Skin Care Product Finds!
Having come from a family of Olay users, (my Mom swears by her Regenerist), I was pretty stoked to find these two SPF Olay products that not only protect you from the damaging sun's UVA/UVB rays, but double as moisturizer and reduce fine lines and wrinkles that are scarily showing up these days!

Olay Total Effects Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 30:
Always one to find a solution product that kills two birds with one stone, I'm loving this new reformulated daily moisturizer with SPF which offers a really nice lightweight feel, fights the seven signs of aging with a unique vitamin complex, and it features Olay's SolaSheer Technology, which combines broad spectrum sun protection and moisturizing agents to help protect skin from both harmful UVA and UVB rays. A lot of women avoid SPF creams on their face because they tend to be heavy, but this one makes me feel like I’m not wearing even wearing an SPF. Click here for more info.

Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream SPF30:
This cream with SPF 30 is pretty amazing, offering the same anti-aging benefits as their award-winning, Micro-Sculpting Cream which instantly reduces the look of fine lines and wrinkles (and firming skin over time), but it's also formulated with their Advanced SolaSheer Technology which helps defend the skin against harmful UVA/UVB rays.

Both products have amazing benefits, but check out the links above to find out which one would be best for you!

Summer Hair Beauty Tips

When it comes to hair care, I've always relied on my stylist background to guide me through the summer.  But when I had a chance to interview a celeb stylist and hair care expert, I was all ears. We asked Justin German, Pantene Consulting Stylist, a few hot weather hair questions, here's what he had to say:

Q. We are always focusing on our skin when it comes to the summer elements, but what toll does the sun take on our hair?

A. In the summer, the sun is the most damaging element. In general, it dries and dehydrates hair, but on days of high exposure, think days of laying in the sun for long periods, it can even cause heat damage! That’s a big contributor to hair lightening at the ends during the summer months. To combat the toll the sun takes on hair, consider using a deep conditioning treatment 1-2 times a week. My fave is the new Pantene 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner. It provides instant softness to the hair and since it only takes 3 minutes, it can be incorporated to any routine!

Q. What about salt water and chlorine?
A. Salt water and chlorine both definitely effect hair, but they do so differently. While salt water dries hair and lightens the ends, what’s commonly seen as ‘surfer hair,’almost a natural ombre, chlorine can turn blonde hair green and even make brown hair look ‘muddy’ or dull. To avoid this, always rinse hair thoroughly after exposure to salt water or chlorine.

Q. Any suggestions for blondes to keep their hair from going green?
A. Outside of rinsing hair after swimming in chlorinated water, blondes can also add a clarifying shampoo to their weekly regimen like the Pantene Damage Detox Weekly Deep Cleanse Purifying Shampoo. There’s lots of clarifying shampoos on the market, but the great part about this one is it also contains antioxidants to remove damaging impurities from the hair that can help cause that discoloration.

Q. Do you have any tips for protecting hair against hot weather elements?

A.The best defense is going to be wearing a hat, but that’s simply not doable every day. Instead, protect hair by keeping it well hydrated and using a heat protector like the Pantene Smooth Heat Protecting spray, even if the hair is being air dried.

Q. Some people like to lighten their hair naturally with lemon juice or chamomile tea in the summer, does it work or is it damaging?

A. Lightening hair with lemon juice or chamomile tea works and is less damaging than some of the high-peroxide bleaches out there. The key difference is going to be the end result, while these at home solutions work, they’re only going to provide a subtle, naturally sun-kissed look. They won’t cause a dramatic transformation in colour like the professional bleaches will.

Q. What should we look for when buying product to nourish and hydrate our damaged hair?

A. Look for formulations that will hydrate while still allowing great style. In the summer Canadians are constantly outdoors and in the winter heaters are running non-stop. Our hair doesn’t get a break from drying conditions, so it needs to be maintained daily, in a way that still allows it to look great! Because of this, I always recommend Pantene Expert Collection Intense Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner. The collection provides the instant hydration hair craves but won’t weigh it down. I also recommend incorporating a weekly treatment into your regimen like Pantene 3 Minute Miracle Deep
Conditioners, which I mentioned earlier. These treatments nourish hair in just three minutes and come in a few formulations to suit different hair needs, so there’s no need to compromise on great hair for added moisture.

Q. We're excited about Pantene's Airspray. Can you explain how it doesn't dry out the hair and in fact helps moisturize it?

A. Actually, it is best known for adding shine, but Airspray does gives the feeling of moisturized hair because it doesn’t leave strands stiff, sticky or crunchy – you can even run your fingers through your hair after applying it! On top of that, its alcohol-free formula puts you one step ahead of a traditional aerosol hairspray since the alcohol in traditional formulas dehydrates strands.

My Top 3 Summer Hair Care Beauty Tips

1.  Stay Away from Hair Dryers and Curling Irons
I like to try to stay away from the heat of hair dryers and curling irons as much as possible. The heat of the sun is damaging enough, especially during the summer. Check out our video below on curling your hair using hair claw clips and hairspray (it only takes five minutes)! And if you are pressed for time and need to use heat, ensure you protect your hair. I like Pantene Smooth Heat Protecting Spray which shields hair from damage and seals in shine.

2. Condition, Condition, Condition
If you colour your hair like me and my sister do, keeping our hair nourished and healthy during the summer can be challenging.  I recently tried the Pantene Expert Intense Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner and I love it! I really noticed instant results after just one wash. My hair also felt super soft. Having tried salon brands before, I was really pleased with the quality of Pantene Expert, and of course, the price! To keep my hair hydrated, I’ve also been using the Pantene 3 Minute Miracle at least once a week to deeply conditioner. Since it only takes three minutes, it’s super easy for me to fit in my schedule.

3. Wrap It or Twist It!
This year I've bought a really great scarf to wrap my hair in when I'm out in the garden or doing yard work.  I like to twist it into a bun, to protect my ends.

Cool Hair Care Product Finds!

—Pantene Airspray
Possibly the product I'm most excited about, is this new first-ever alcohol free, aerosol hairspray that delivers a flexible hold, without the stiffness or stickiness of most hairsprays.  The absence of alcohol in the formula, which can dry out your strands, helps give more flexible hold for natural movement.  What's cool too, because of the flexible hold, you are able to brush and restyle your hair throughout the day leaving hair feeling moisturized and soft. Check it out here.

—Pantene Expert Shampoos + Conditioners
Having used Pantene's shampoos and conditioners for the past ten years, I was excited to learn about their new Expert shampoos and conditioners, and especially the Intense Hydration line, which instantly quenches hair with moisture. If you are looking for quality results at an affordable price, this is it! Check it out here!

—Pantene Pro-V 3 Minute Miracle
To keep my hair from going frizzy (all day), this deep conditioner super charges my hair care routine, nourishing and making my hair stronger. I’ve been using 3 Minute Miracle twice a week. To find out more, see here.

Summer Do's To Go (In five Minutes)!
Check out our video below where I share two of my favorite summer hair style ‘goto's!’ These are super easy and also protect your hair from heat damaging rays and products. The first style, ’No-Heat Beach Wave’ is one of my faves! Make a loose beach wave in five minutes using a bit of hairspray and hair claw clips! No need for curling irons, keeping your hair healthy and beautiful! The second style, ‘No-Sweat Twist’, is an easy way to create an up-do without anything other than a hair band. Add a fresh pom pom gerbera flower to make it pop! Check out the video below!
