IKEA x Tom Dixon Launch DELAKTIG Part 2 (Bed)

Last year IKEA and Tom Dixon launched DELAKTIG, an open-sourced and customizable sofa platform offering a new seating solution for the home. This February, IKEA and Tom Dixon continue their award-winning* collaboration with the release of the DELAKTIG bed frame which can be customized by users to create the sleeping environment they want.

“I’m fascinated by the bed as a kind of primary unit that everybody needs,” says Tom Dixon. “It’s essential; we spend more time in contact with our beds than with any other piece of furniture. So why not make it do more?”

The new bed frame, available in a queen size, offers users a platform to add, remove and swap around accompanying accessories - including a side table, lighting and headboard - to suit their way of living, or in this case, sleeping. Made from 50% recycled aluminum, the extruded frame is cut into pieces connected with bent joints for maximum stability (a production method also used within the aviation industry) making the design extra light-weight, yet durable. Using a special fitting (sold separately) users can also add a headboard in two different styles (black or rattan) to create a new look.

DELAKTIG: Covers that last: Next month IKEA will also release new cover options for the original DELAKTIG seating platform. Available in three colors - dusty pink, soft beige and stone gray - the new covers will offer higher resistance against abrasion and color-fading.

DELAKTIG HOTEL: IKEA x Tom Dixon
The Swedish word DELAKTIG means involved. To involve consumers in the launch of the new DELAKTIG bed, last week IKEA created and launched a pop-up hotel in Lisbon, Portugal. For one night only, five guests got to experience, experiment and get involved with things that contribute to a sound sleep and a good life – including the customizable, versatile and durable DELAKTIG bed – in five different rooms designed by IKEA: the everyday fabulous room, the green room, the family room, the minimalist room and the comfort room. Including the photos for decor inspiration —love all the lighting too!

Back in 2016 (right when DELAKTIG was announced), Poppytalk had the opportunity to speak with Tom Dixon while he was here at IDS Vancouver.  Click here for the interview.

*In 2018, IKEA received a Red Dot Award: Product Design for the sofa platform DELAKTIG, developed in collaboration with Tom Dixon. Red Dot Award is an internationally organized competition which reviews the best products of the year.
