We are super stoked to share with you today an excerpt from former Poppytalk contributor, Rachel Mae Smith's new book, Hello Color, 25 Bright Ideas for DIY Decor. As many of you know, Rachel's past projects here and on her own site, The Crafted Life are always super colourful, so creating a book filled with colour was inevitable! The result is a gorgeous collection of projects with home decor in mind. Divided into four chapters the book covers each room in your home, The Living Room, The Dining Room, The Kitchen and The Bedroom. The craft we're sharing today is from the bedroom category, featuring a cute makeover of wooden hangers using temporary tattoos and and a little Mod Podge. So clever! Let's take a look!

Today, we're super-stoked to be sharing a DIY from artist/designer, Emily Katz's new book, Modern Macramé, 33 Stylish Projects for Your Handmade Home (from Ten Speed Press). Some of you may know Emily from her instagram account, or perhaps you have taken one of her sold-out macramé workshops she's taught around the world, but if not, let us tell you, Emily creates some pretty swoon-worthy aspirational interiors and her custom hand-knotted pieces are at the heart of this age-old craft that's undergoing a huge renaissance right now.
We spotted a new furniture makeover by Nicole Phillips of the blog, Visual Heart recently and we asked her if she'd like to feature it here on Poppytalk this week. We love what she did and think you will too! Here's the post, in Nicole's words below:
On a quest to get better organized I've been re-organizing our very small and rather crowded pantry. This project has been long overdue, and as you'll see below in the before photo, rather embarrassingly out of control too. I wanted to create a budget-friendly project, so I picked up some canning jars (versus individual, more expensive jars) to store the dry goods in and and then also created some printable labels inspired by a field trip last week to a local botanical shop.
This post is in partnership with Scotch™ Brand and Post-it® Brand. Scotch™ Brand and Post-it ® Brand products work the first time, every time.
Having always been wanting to create one of those Post-it ® Brand Note murals, and with Halloween just around the corner, when the folks at Post-it® Brand asked us to work together, why not create a pixel-style mural using their Post-it® Notes for a party idea!?
We love that this project can also be translated into any event or even to decorate a kid’s, teen or dorm room. With that in mind, for this project we will be showing you how to turn any image you like into pixel art using Photoshop and then taking it from digital form to real-life mural. Check out our how-to below.
You can never really go wrong with a minimalist look, and it seems that the plywood look has turned into a classic after all these years. It doesn't really seem to be dating itself and if accessorized right, it can be a really great look on a budget. Here are a few that crossed our radar.

Today we're excited to share with you a really fun project we came across on Instagram by Kezz of Kezzabeth blog out of the UK. Kezz and her partner Grant have been very busy fixing up their second home, one room at a time and documenting it all on her blog. We loved this patterned floor they made for their conservatory renovation. The result is an attractive patterned floor that looks like tiles! Kerry shares the how-to below. Thank you Kerry!
~Jan
Patterned tiles are a huge trend at the moment - but if you’re up for a bit of challenge, you can save yourself some cash by creating your own patterned floor, just with a bit of paint!
Love this illustrated mural idea by Mardrid artist, Angela Leon. Leon created this fun piece back in 2010 which tells us she was onto something back then and way ahead of her time. The banana leaves and flora straight out of a current colouring book. Inspiration for a fun weekend project perhaps?
We love the look of rattan for interiors right now. This durable mesh is not only for the outdoors (as it has been prominent as of late), but we're seeing it pop up again inside, in everything from headboards to cabinets.
Did you know caning material is actually quite reasonably priced and relatively easy to find? We've been inspired to make something ourselves and even more so after we came across this DIY project we spotted recently on Livet Hemma (above). We love what stylist Pella Hedeby created using three IVAR side unit ends and a few feet of caning mesh (also known as machine cane).
I recently inherited this art deco makeup vanity (and a sort of unmatching/painted matching chest of drawers) from an Aunt who passed last fall, which is a bit of a bittersweet story. She was the loveliest of ladies (who never had any children of her own), but was much loved by all of her nieces and nephews. Last fall she died of breast cancer which had metastasized to different areas of her body. Her name was Auntie Betty, and she has left a big hole in all of our hearts.
This past week we were inspired by our friendly neighborhood shop and workshop place, Collage Collage's fun mobile project they posted on Instagram. I asked owner Erin Bonifero if she's be interested in sharing the project on here on Poppytalk! This mobile project is something they do at their Crafternoon Camps they are holding this summer at their Main Street shop here in Vancouver which anyone is welcome to sign up and join if you happen to be in the Vancouver area. Erin explains their inspiration and shares a few how-to photos below.
Guest post by Arren Williams
We're throwing it back today to this awesome project Arren Williams of Casa Cubista did for us a couple of years ago. We had spotted his graphic black and white pillows he had made back then, and we were so thrilled when he accepted our invitation to re-create them for a DIY on Poppytalk. Also if you get a chance, and haven't yet, check out Casa Cubista, a beautiful online shop out of Portugal filled with handmade modern things for the home designed and/or edited by Arren and his partner David Pimentel.
Check out the DIY below.
With Easter just around the corner, thoughts of creating a tablescape was this week's goal. I always love a challenge of creating something without buying anything new (including supplies); and so this project ended up not costing us anything extra since I used stuff we already had around, except purchasing fresh eggs. Digging through our craft supplies I found leftover iron-on transfer paper from another project and some white fabric to create napkins, for the eggs, a little modge podge, paint and a printer. The camellias, from our tree. Get the how-to and free printables for the napkins below. For the decoupage eggs, see our previous post or click here!
We're excited today to share a DIY project from Christine Schmidt of Yellow Owl Workshop's newest book, Make It Yours, Patterns and inspiration to stamp, stencil and customize your stuff. Once again, Christine makes all our DIY dreams come true with a stunning collection of projects that are inspiring and fresh. From creating the most adorable stamped clay ornaments to turning an old dresser into an eye-catching art deco showpiece, Christine shows readers how to create gorgeous projects using unexpected materials. To launch the book which is on sale today we're sharing the art deco dresser project which is one of our favourites from the book. Check it out below!
Earlier last month we happened upon this triangle display shelf via Instagram from Moorea Seal in Seattle and were inspired that it was handmade. Ashley Miller (who works there) created it as a display shelf for the shop and so we asked these two ladies if they would be interested in sharing how it was made as a DIY for Poppytalk. And we were thrilled they agreed!
The result is a stunning shelf perfect for not only retail, but at home too. Also, be sure to check out both Moorea Seal online and Ashley's Etsy shop, Charcoal and Ash. All equally impressive - more of their contact info below!
Recently when I was baking and using up the last of our sugar, I noticed after rolling the sugar bag closed to put away, that it's texture was much like those paper bag planters you see in shops these days. With the help of a few coats of paint, we loved how they turned out. Making for a pretty and budget friendly way to wrap a gift of potted flowers or plants. This project is super easy and can be done in less than an hour.
This weekend I did a little makeover on our plain white LINNMON table that was looking a little worse for wear. With a few stains and scratches, it was time to either replace it or make it last a little longer with a cover up of some kind. Since we're really loving the terrazzo look lately (see previous post), I had the idea to cut out little pieces of marble and black contact paper to look like little broken up pieces of stone.
If you just read our previous post, we had mentioned we've been following San Antonio-based artist, Rikkianne Van Kirk for quite some time here on Poppytalk and recently caught up with her on instagram where we noticed a whirlwind of creative activity. For her Artist in Residence at
at Richter Goods (see previous post), Rikkianne needed some display shelves to show her work. We loved how they turned out and asked Rikkianne if she could share how they made them for the blog. These shelves would work great for a display to take to craft shows, in-store, or for the home.
